5 minutes of Mindful Creativity

When it all feels a bit too heavy or serious, creativity can offer a bit of light relief for both body and mind. Taking 5 minutes to engage in some simple mindful drawing exercises will not only build up your technical skill and confidence if you practice regularly, it will also give you a nice dose of dopamine that can boost your mood and improve your overall sense of well-being.


Lesson 1 / Line

Working with a range of pigment liners this first taster of mindful creativity scaffolds mark-making, exploring the weight of line using different pressures and stroke directions. These kinds of ‘drills’, when repeated over time, build up the muscles in the wrist and improve co-ordination. Although these exercises may seem simplistic its the repetitive nature of the exercises that induces the mind into an almost meditative state. Find a quiet spot in the house, pop on some music as you work or light a candle to help you get in the ‘zone’.


Lesson 2 / Line

Building on the exercises from the previous tutorial, we start to look at extending those shapes as well as adding a few extra to our vocabulary…

In this tutorial Ellie takes you through the different surfaces of the brush - encouraging you to use the brush itself to do the work for you.


Lesson 4 / Line

Time for some form-finding - there is so much springing into life in our gardens at the moment! Connect to your senses by picking, smelling and then drawing these beautiful forms.
